Thirty-seven-year-old French jockey Jean-Baptiste Hamel commenced his apprenticeship late in life at the age of 21 years old, when he was apprenticed in the stables of Robert Collet at Chantilly.
He was granted a jockeys’ license in 2001. Prior to coming to Macau, he had ridden over 560 career winners. He has ridden in France, Spain, Italy, Qatar, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
He has ridden eight Group 1 winners; two in France, three in the United Kingdom, two in Turkey and one in Macau.
Hamel commenced riding in Macau in May 2019. In his first full season 2019/2020 he rode a total of 28 winners and took fifth place in the Jockeys’ Championships.
His best days tally to date has been a four timer on the 22/02/20. On the 13th of June 2020, Hamel won his first Group 1 race on Hostwin Saturn in the Macau Guineas.
