Peter Lao joined the first Apprentice Jockeys Training Programme of the Macau Jockey Club in 1990. He was first apprenticed to former Hong Kong trainer Jerry Ng. Later he moved to the Charles Leck stable, before completing his apprenticeship with Darby Armstrong.
Lao was crowned Champion Apprentice on three occasions and remained in the top bracket of Macau jockeys until early 2000 when he moved to Singapore.
Lao was the first local rider from Macau to be invited by an overseas racing organization to participate in an international event, when he was invited by the Mauritius Turf Club to participate in the International Jockeys Day in Mauritius in 1999.
His feature wins in Singapore include Queen Elizabeth ll Cup and Raffles Cup on Emerald Isle, the Kranji Mile on Pacific Prince and the Patrons Bowl on Bon Amie.
His current riding weight is 118lbs
